■ Candidate Lee’s “Alien Invasion” remark raises serious concerns about his suitability as a national leader
In response to a foreign correspondent’s inquiry regarding whether the United States would support Taiwan in the event of a Chinese military action, Candidate Lee evaded the question by stating, “I will consider that answer when aliens are about to invade the Earth.”
Such a response starkly reveals a lack of serious reflection and strategic foresight on a critical security matter that deeply concerns both the international community and the citizens of the Republic of Korea. The security situation in the Taiwan Strait is not a hypothetical scenario but a pressing and concrete issue that bears direct implications for the security of our nation.
To dismiss such a grave matter with an unrealistic and frivolous reference to an “Alien Invasion” is irresponsible and demonstrates a profound disregard for the solemn duties expected of a presidential candidate.
Matters of foreign policy and national security demand earnest consideration and cannot be trivialized or treated with levity. Every utterance by a prospective leader sends signals to the international community and influences trust among allies. Candidate Lee’s comment risks generating unnecessary confusion among allied nations and is therefore wholly inappropriate.
Furthermore, despite professing a stance of “Moderation” and “Flexibility,” Candidate Lee consistently resorts to humor rather than articulating a clear and responsible position on critical foreign and security issues. This pattern not only undermines his credibility but also conveys a troubling attitude of disregard toward national security.
Candidate Kim Moon-soo recognizes foreign affairs and security as pivotal issues that determine the destiny of the nation. He maintains a clear and principled stance centered on the defense of liberal democracy and the safeguarding of our people’s safety and sovereignty through a robust Korea-U.S. alliance.
True leadership requires clear strategic communication, not frivolous remarks. Candidate Lee must promptly provide a responsible and transparent stance to the people of Korea and the international community.
